Sapelo celebrates the fragile beauty of Georgia’s Sapelo Island and the Saltwater Geechee community who call it home. In partnership with the nonprofit agency, Save Our Legacy Ourself (SOLO), a percentage of sales will support community-led efforts to reestablish their cultivation of the Sapelo Sour—oranges first brought to the island from Spain in the 1600s.

The Island

Sapelo is a barrier island tucked along Georgia’s Golden Isles, the home of the Saltwater Geechee community, who is a distinct subgroup of the Gullah-Geechee.

The Partner

SOLO is a Sapelo-based nonprofit agency—the work of historian and activist Cornelia Walker Bailey—now led by Maurice Bailey, her son. SOLO exists to preserve the culture and traditions of the Saltwater Geechee by investing in agricultural and economic opportunity for the people of Sapelo.

The Sapelo Sour

The Sapelo Sour is a Georgia heirloom crop descended from the Seville Orange, first brought to the island in the 1600s. These oranges are the gold standard citrus for bitter spirits like aperitivos. Presently, there remains only a handful of these trees growing wild on Sapelo Island.

The Aperitivo

An aperitivo is a traditional pre-meal drink, designed to stimulate the appetite before dinner. The phrase itself refers both to a light, bittersweet alcoholic beverage and to the social act of gathering in the late afternoon: where happy hour meets golden hour.

Our Sapelo Aperitivo

This aperitivo welcomes you to that distinctly Southern invitation to slow down as a means to catch up, to connect, to savor, and to embrace the moment in front of you.

The Project

Creature Comforts has partnered with SOLO to establish the first-ever Sapelo Sour orchard, an investment to both rejuvenate the existing orange population while advancing SOLO’s mission to preserve Saltwater Geechee culture.
